The International Amateur Boxing Association sanctioned women's boxing some years ago. Women have been competing in amateur codes in most states for several years, and  Boxing Australia introduced senior women to the Australian Championships in March 2002.

The most populous state (New South Wales) has a legal bar against women competing in amateur competitions.

The rules for males and females are basically the same. Female boxers must also wear a breast protector.
